Ice Breaker

Action developed for Antipodes Café in Oslo, Norway

In order to celebrate the bicentennial of “Instructions of the Year XIII“, the mandate brought by the representatives from the Oriental Province to the Assembly of the Year XIII of the United Provinces of the River Plate, that got together in 1813, Felipe Ridao, uruguayan artist migrated to Norway, proposed himself as the executor of the instructions that some friends send him over by mail.

We send him the instructions to make an ice semisphere, draw a map of the Arctic Ccean in the wall of their home- gallery and invite some friends over to “break the ice”. It was one of the first public actions happening in Antipodes Café, and norwegians are known to be cold. For both reasons, it seemed like a good idea in that time, try to break the ice. On those dates, Norway and Russia were signing a treaty to divide the uses and explotation of uses of the Arctic Ocean.

On April 3rd, from 20h., a few brave men and women drank the Arctic Ocean together with Vodka and Akvavit.

a Dress for Lady Gaga

The idea was born after loading Raquel’s car with thousands of earphones assigned by Renfe (Spanish Railway Company) to carry out a reuse workshop coordinated by basurama and entupunto.

We were astonished when we realized that the amount of earphones we got was only collected on a single day and was only corresponding with one train route. How many not reusable headphones end up in the trash daily?

The workshop never took place, but during the experimentation with the earphones and the workshop design, searching for references… Lady Gaga as an icon for new attires…#adressforladygaga.

Our goal was Lady Gaga to get the dress. After a social media campaign (mainly through twitter @VestidoLadyGaga) we finally get close enough. The dress have been sent to Brandon Maxwell (Lady Gaga stylist) … will Lady Gaga wear it?

All the earphones used to weave the dress are single-use, non-recyclable and almost never reused. Their usable time does not exceed three hours (the time it takes for the route Madrid to Barcelona by train). The price of each earphone in the market is between 0.1 and 0.3 USD. The enterprises that manufacture them have the ability to supply 1 million earphones a month and the shipping time is of only 15 days to anywhere in the world.

For knitting the dress we used 235 earphones, each of which measures extended 2.15 m, which means that the ball of headphones used measured 535.8 meters. The result is a dress of 78 cm long, 45 cm hip, that weighs 2,720 kg and that corresponds to a size 36-38.

The dress it is not only a dress, but a musical instrument, and a loudspeaker of more than two hundred of loudspeakers … a dress for Lady Gaga.

Throughs, desires and images taken by the neighbors were projected on multiple abandon spaces of the neighborhood. The intended was to make visible the existence of a large number of non-accessible spaces that could be converted temporarily in public spaces.

The project aims was to find new utilities for deserted places in the city of Asunción. The main objective was the enrichment of these places trough the reutilization of waste. Trash was modified and converted in an urban playground. Thanks to this intervention the neglected public spaces turned into a place for leisure activities, where people could enjoy. Hence there is no need for a high amount of investment to recover spaces that belong to citizens.

RUS Buenos Aires: Everyone is a cardboard collector

In Buenos Aires we found an essential phenomenon that helps us to understand the trash´s reality, and also a key to comprehend some of the social conflicts of Latin-American society. This fact is about sorting waste out on an informal way, mainly cardboard. This issue has been tackled from multiple approaches. In this project we worked with the cardboard collectors not as an “object” but as an action platform.

During the Milan Design Festival, Basurama worked in a public outdoor parking, Cavalcavia Bussa, situated on an elevated via located in the north of Milan.

The goal of the intervention was to activate the space through small home devices made with lightweight tools and discarted furniture.
25 urban devices were built and available for one week.

The objective of this project was to highlight the ecological, social and urban importance of the work that the informal trashpickers do. They are the ones showing the different elements that define the cycle of garbage in Mexico City. Our aim was to make visible the contrast between the carts that scavengers and street traders used for their daily work with the widespread use of private transport, which becomes the epitome of pollution air in the city.

Leftover Design in Seoul Design Festival

South Korea is the 13th economy of the world, based in the manufacturing of electronic consumer products. Inside every cartboard box sent to foreign countries, there is an appliance packed in bright white styrofoam.

Korean design publisher ‘Design House’ invited basurama to Seoul Design Festival to drive an experimental design workshop with the most important korean packaging material, estirofoam, as raw material.

Workshop estrategy consisted in using the collected styrofoam in Seoul streets for all the design process. During four days, a group of korean and spanish designers explored different ways of reusing the material by making different graphic interventions, furniture construction and light design. As the group work evoluted, another target appeared: how to transform the workshop booth into a comfortable place so visitors of the festival could come into and feel the difference between the exhibition space and an interactive environment where playing and creating was possible.
